The 1913 $5 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle is one of the most distinctive and artistic designs in all of American coinage. Created by renowned sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, the Indian Head series was introduced in 1908 during the sweeping redesign of U.S. coinage championed by President Theodore Roosevelt. Pratt’s design was revolutionary for its time because it used an incuse (sunken) design, meaning the portrait and lettering are recessed into the surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This unusual technique gave the coin a bold, matte-like appearance and remains unique among circulating U.S. coins.

The 1913 issue was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia with a mintage of 915,000 pieces, making it a better-produced date in the series, though truly high-grade survivors are much scarcer today. A specimen graded MS64 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) represents a beautifully preserved example with strong original luster and only minor marks from brief contact during the minting process. The addition of a Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC) green sticker further confirms that the coin is solid or high-end for the grade, an important distinction for collectors seeking premium quality pieces. Today, the 1913 $5 Indian in PCGS MS64 CAC is prized both for its artistic design and its place within the historic early-20th-century renaissance of American coinage.
