1860-S Seated Liberty Quarter — PCGS AU50

The 1860-S Seated Liberty Quarter is a genuinely scarce and desirable issue from the early San Francisco Mint. Only 56,000 quarters were struck at San Francisco in 1860, and survival rates are low, particularly in higher circulated grades. Certified PCGS AU50, this example sits at an especially appealing level for the collector—showing only moderate circulation while retaining much of the detail and character of the original design.  Currently on 2 coins have ever graded higher than this example!

Struck just one year before the outbreak of the Civil War, the coin dates from a fascinating period in California history. The San Francisco Mint had opened only six years earlier, largely to turn the enormous quantities of gold coming out of the California Gold Rush into federal coinage. While gold dominated San Francisco's production, relatively small quantities of silver coins were struck, making many early "S" Mint quarters considerably scarcer today.

Finding an 1860-S quarter in About Uncirculated condition is a significant numismatic opportunity. Many surviving examples saw extensive use in the commerce of the rapidly growing West, and relatively few were saved by collectors. With its PCGS AU50 certification, low original mintage and historic San Francisco pedigree, this is a wonderful example of a scarce pre-Civil War quarter with both rarity and a great American story.
