Additional information
The 1915 $5 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle is part of the celebrated Indian Head gold series designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, whose innovative incuse design set this coin apart from every other circulating U.S. issue. Introduced in 1908 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s push to elevate the artistic beauty of American coinage, Pratt’s design features a Native American portrait wearing a full headdress on the obverse and a perched eagle on the reverse. Because the devices are recessed into the surface rather than raised, the coin has a distinctive appearance and was the first U.S. circulating coin to use this technique.
Struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia, the 1915 issue had a mintage of 588,000 pieces, making it a moderately scarce date in the series—particularly in higher Mint State grades. An example graded MS64 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) represents a sharply struck coin with strong original luster and only minor contact marks from the minting and bagging process. The presence of a Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC) green sticker further confirms that the coin is solid or premium quality for the grade. Collectors value the 1915 $5 Indian not only for its historic early-20th-century design but also as a well-preserved example from the final decade of circulating U.S. gold coinage before the gold recall of the 1930s.
