1903 Liberty Head “V” Nickel, NGC MS64 CAC

The 1903 Liberty Head Nickel is a classic from the tail end of the series’ run, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. By this point, the design—created by Charles E. Barber—was a familiar sight in commerce, with Liberty’s crowned portrait on the obverse and the bold Roman numeral “V” (for five cents) framed by a laurel wreath on the reverse. Most examples saw years of heavy circulation, and problem-free Mint State survivors are far scarcer than their mintage might suggest.

This NGC MS64 example, approved by CAC for superior quality, boasts satiny luster and crisp definition in Liberty’s hair and the wreath. The surfaces are clean for the grade, with only minimal marks visible under magnification, and the eye appeal is further enhanced by even, original coloration. For the collector seeking a high-end example of a turn-of-the-century Liberty Nickel without crossing into the steep price jump of Gem grades, this piece is an exceptional choice.
