1838 Capped B-1 NGC AU50 Premier Vaultbox Red Core
The 1838 Capped Bust Quarter (Browning-1 variety) represents the final year of the Capped Bust quarter series, a design originally created by engraver John Reich and later modified by Chief Engraver William Kneass. First introduced in 1815, the Capped Bust design features Liberty wearing a cloth cap on the obverse and a heraldic eagle on the reverse. By 1838 the denomination was nearing the end of its run, and the year is notable because only a single die marriage (B-1) is known for the issue. This die pair combined a new obverse with a reverse that had been used earlier in 1837, making it an interesting study piece for die-variety specialists.
Struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia, the 1838 quarter had a reported mintage of 366,000 pieces and contains 90% silver with an actual silver weight of about 0.1933 troy ounces. A specimen graded AU50 retains strong detail with traces of original mint luster remaining in protected areas, showing only light wear on the highest points from brief circulation. As part of the VaultBox Premier 2025 release, this historic early American quarter represents a desirable collectible from the early U.S. Mint era—combining classic 19th-century silver coinage with the modern excitement of a curated VaultBox pull. Collectors appreciate the 1838 issue not only for its scarcity in higher grades but also for its status as the last year of the Capped Bust quarter design, closing out more than two decades of one of America’s most iconic early coin types.
