1722 Rosa Americana Halfpenny
Martin 3.3-C.1, W-1222. Rarity-5. DEI GRATIA REX / UTILE DULCI. AU-55 (PCGS).
This boldly defined example displays areas of brassy gold color on otherwise antique copper surfaces. The obverse is trivially drawn toward 6 o’clock, affecting only the denticulation from 4 to 7 o’clock, while the reverse is nicely centered. Generally smooth with considerable gloss, there is a swirl of variegated color at the lower right obverse border that is associated with a somewhat rough texture in that area. All in all a pleasing representative of this distinct type of 1722 Rosa Americana halfpenny, the legends presented as outlined above.
Pedigree Information Nelson-11. Formerly offered as lot 1 in 2002 September Heritage Long Beach Sale, where it was described as, “An aesthetically pleasing example, the mostly medium brown surfaces reveal a few splashes of tan coloration around the peripheries. Both sides are sharply defined with no mentionable abrasions and only minor porosity in the planchet.
