1804 1C Restrike MS65 Brown PCGS. CAC. This cataloger told the story of the 1804, 1810, and 1823 large cent restrikes at the 1996 ANS Coinage of the Americas Conference. The obverse was originally used for the 1803 S-261 large cent, and the 3 was altered to a 4 in the die. The reverse is from the die for 1820 N-12. These pieces were probably struck in the early 1860s.

Both dies are heavily rusted, and the obverse has arc cracks at the left, with a branch to Liberty’s nose. Some evidence of lapping is noted on the obverse. In his Large Cent Encyclopedia, Walter Breen noted that early die states (his Die State 1) have 10° (medal turn) die alignment, and that late die states (his Die State 2) have 190° (coin turn) alignment. This piece has 270° die alignment with the top of the reverse opposite 3 o’clock on the obverse. We have only seen two or three others with similar rotation.

This lovely golden-brown Gem has excellent eye appeal with subtle splashes of mahogany toning. A few scattered surface marks are entirely trivial. Population: 5 in 65 Brown, 7 finer. CAC does not distinguish between original and restrike 1804 cents, but one can assume that the MS64, two MS65, and five MS66 examples are all Restrikes (6/16). Our EAC grade MS62.
