The 1851 Large Cent, often simply referred to as a “Large Cent,” is a coin that was minted by the United States Mint in the year 1851. The Large Cent was a denomination of United States coinage that was minted from 1793 to 1857. It was the first regular-issue coin minted by the U.S. Mint and was initially made of 100% copper.

The Large Cent went through several design changes over the years. The design on the obverse (front) side typically featured a portrait of Liberty, while the reverse (back) side depicted various motifs and designs.

By 1851, the design had gone through several modifications. The obverse side featured a depiction of Liberty facing left, surrounded by stars along the border, and the year “1851” below the portrait. The reverse side displayed a wreath and the words “ONE CENT” within it, and the coin’s weight “1 OZ. PURE COPPER” was inscribed around the wreath.

The Large Cent series is known for its historical significance, evolving designs, and the challenges that arise in collecting due to the age and condition of the coins.
