REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM COIN NEWS TODAY SEPTEMBER 15TH 2006

Coin collectors have always loved collecting error coins, such as the famous 1937 D three legged buffalo nickel and more recently the Wisconsin Extra Leaf State Quarter.

However what may become one of the hottest coins in tommorow’s marketplace may be the newest discovery from Jonathan Lerner of Scarsdale Coin.  After searching several mint bags of the Nebraska state quarters, Jonathan discovered that several coins showed quite an interesting die crack right above the Chimeny Rock.  “It sure was funny how it appears as if smoke is rising right out of the mountain!”

Chimney Rock design was picked for the Nebraska quarter and Governer Dave Heineman announced his selection at a June 1, 2005, news conference at the State Capitol.  Secretary of State John Gale, chairman of the Nebraska State Quarter Design Committee, joined the governor for the announcement.

The design features a pioneer family, a covered wagon and Chimney Rock in the background.  Chimney Rock gained fame during the 19th centruy U.S. western migration.  The clay and sandstone rock formation is considered a natural wonder and was a landmark during westward expansion.  The design honors the spirit and courage of the pioneers and their hopes and dreams for a better life.

The Chimney Rock design was one of four design finalists considered by Heineman. The other designs included the State Capitol with the inscription “Home of the Unicameral,” “The Sower” statue with the inscription “Home of Arbor Day,” and Ponca Chief Standing Bear with the state motto, “Equality Before the Law.”
