1876 California Fractional Gold 25¢ – BG-879 – PCGS MS64 PL – Di Pierro Collection

A beautiful and historically fascinating example of California fractional gold, this 1876 BG-879 represents the ingenuity of the American West during the decades following the California Gold Rush. These tiny gold coins were privately produced to help fill the need for small-denomination currency when conventional small change was often in short supply. Although they were not official United States Mint issues, California fractional gold pieces became an enduring part of American monetary history and are now avidly collected for their distinctive designs, gold content, and historical significance.

The BG-879 variety is a round 25-cent California fractional gold piece featuring an Indian Head design. The Breen-Gillio reference catalogs hundreds of varieties across the fractional gold series, making variety identification an important and rewarding part of collecting. BG-879 is classified as Rarity-4, placing it within a recognized category of collectible California fractional gold varieties. <Cite refs={["turn955814search1","turn955814search2"]}/>

What makes this particular example especially desirable is its PCGS MS64 PL designation. The PL, or Prooflike, designation indicates reflective surface characteristics that give the coin an appealing, mirrorlike appearance. This combination of Mint State preservation and prooflike reflectivity is an attractive feature in a series where the tiny planchets and intricate designs can make eye appeal especially important.

Adding further distinction, this coin comes from the Di Pierro Collection, giving it a named collection pedigree that adds provenance and collecting interest. For the specialist in California fractional gold, this 1876 BG-879 offers an appealing combination of Old West history, a cataloged variety, prooflike surfaces, and an established collection pedigree. A wonderful opportunity to acquire a distinctive piece of America's colorful private gold coinage.
