HT-268 Feuchtwanger Cent – PCGS Holder Gold Shield AU53
Offered here is a rare and fascinating piece of American numismatic history: an HT-268 Feuchtwanger Cent in a PCGS holder. Created by Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger, a German-born chemist and metallurgist, this piece dates back to the 1830s, when he proposed his own unique alloy to the U.S. Mint as an alternative to copper cents. The “Feuchtwanger Composition,” primarily made from nickel and copper, was intended to be more durable and cost-effective than traditional materials, although it was ultimately never adopted by the U.S. Mint.
The HT-268 variety is one of the more sought-after Feuchtwanger issues, recognized by its distinctive eagle design on the reverse and the word “ONE CENT” surrounded by a wreath. These coins circulated primarily in the northeastern United States, and surviving examples are treasured by collectors today. This particular piece is beautifully preserved, with sharp details and attractive patina—a great historical addition for collectors who appreciate the charm of 19th-century American tokens.
