1883 Liberty Head Nickel (No CENTS) – PCGS PR65 (Cameo Look), CAC

A striking Gem Proof example with deeply mirrored fields and attractive contrast that approaches a Cameo designation. The reflective surfaces are bold and watery, providing a pleasing backdrop to sharply struck devices, with Liberty’s portrait and the Roman numeral reverse exhibiting excellent detail throughout. Light frost clings to the high points, enhancing the visual separation and giving the coin its desirable “cameo look.” The surfaces are notably clean for the grade, and the CAC approval underscores its status as a solid, premium-quality Proof. An especially appealing representative of this iconic first-year type.

Issued in 1883, this nickel became famous almost immediately due to the omission of the word “CENTS” on the reverse, which led to widespread abuse by gold-platers passing the coins as five-dollar gold pieces—earning the nickname “Racketeer Nickel.” This episode unfolded during the height of the Gilded Age, a time of rapid industrial expansion and opportunism. Public outcry forced the Mint to quickly revise the design later that same year to include “CENTS,” making the No CENTS variety a fascinating and short-lived artifact of American ingenuity—and deception.
