PCGS J-168 (Original) – PCGS MS63BN

The Judd-168 is an important 1855 pattern cent part of the experimental series leading up to the small-cent coinage that debuted in 1856. Featuring the elegant Flying Eagle design on the obverse and the agricultural wreath reverse that would be refined for the 1856–1858 Flying Eagle cents, this pattern represents one of the pivotal prototypes in America’s transition away from the large cent.

Thirteen stars surround an eagle that is flying slightly upward, similar to the Christian Gobrecht/Titian Peale flying eagle design for the Gobrecht dollars (and soon the Flying Eagle cents). The reverse design is similar to the issued large cent. The diameter is intermediate between the large cents struck for commerce in 1855 and the small cents that were first produced in 1856.

In PCGS MS63 Brown, the coin displays strong detail, smooth chocolate-brown surfaces, and excellent originality—traits that are increasingly difficult to find in mid-19th-century pattern issues. As a true “original” Judd-168, it holds significant appeal for advanced pattern collectors and those seeking a key transitional piece in early small-cent development.. This is a R-4 Pattern!
