1674-1681 New Jersey St. Patrick Farthing (1/4P), PCGS #42, F15 OGH, Syd Martin referenced

This scarce New Jersey St. Patrick Farthing (1/4P), certified PCGS F15 in an Old Green Holder, is a wonderful early American colonial copper with documented pedigree and reference appeal. Listed in the Sydney Martin book (page 436) as a  Very Fine column under “N”, this example was acquired in the early 1990s from respected dealer Tom Reynolds, adding solid provenance to an already collectible piece. With honest circulation wear, clear central devices, and pleasing surfaces for the grade, this coin represents an important chapter of pre-federal American numismatics. The old green holder adds another layer of desirability for collectors who appreciate classic PCGS era grading and originality.

Now for a little time travel: these St. Patrick pieces date to the mid-1600s, when New Jersey was still basically wilderness, ale was safer than water, and “fast communication” meant a guy on a horse. While colonists were worrying about crops and trade routes, this humble farthing was helping grease the wheels of early commerce. Nearly 350 years later, it’s no longer buying bread or beer—but it is winning over serious collectors. Proof that even tiny colonial copper can age better than most people… and definitely better than 17th-century fashion.
